2024 Goodwill Ambassador of Chess in Education Presented at the 4th Chess in Education Summit by Judit Polgar, Budapest / 1993 Chess Teacher of the Year Awarded by the U.S. Chess Center, Washington, D.C. / 1996 U.S. Chess-in-Education Committee Commendation For using chess to teach life lessons – presented at the U.S. Capitol

For over thirty years, Fernando has dedicated career to meeting the social and emotional needs of
children and families as a school counselor, enrichment coordinator, and licensed therapist in
community organizations. My focus is on establishing strong relationships with diverse youth
and their families to boost their involvement in social and educational settings. Chess is my
primary tool for promoting decision-making skills, academic motivation, career exploration, and
conflict resolution. I develop innovative social-emotional counseling programs, particularly those
incorporating chess, to support personal development. The game serves as a metaphor for life’s
complexities and the strategies required for effective decision-making. By sharing experiences
and emotions during chess games, I foster trust and positivity, enhancing the gaming experience
and deepening connections among students, which ultimately leads to a better understanding of
both the game and the emotional dynamics at play.
