Victor Viorel Bologan born December 14, 1971, in Chișinău, is a Moldovan chess Grandmaster. He learned chess at age seven from his father, a computer specialist, and his mother, a Spanish teacher. Coached by Ion Solonar (from 1981) and later by Vyacheslav Chebanenko, Bologan became a Candidate Master in 1991. He graduated from high school with a focus on Spanish in 1988 and from the Russian State Academy of Physical Culture (RSAPC) in 1993, later completing his PhD there in 1996 on the structure of high-level chess players’ training. He also trained under Mark Dvoretsky. Bologan achieved his GM title in October 1991, after sharing the forth place at the last 1991 USSR Championship. He won more than 70 International Competitions among them 1997 New York Open, 2003 Aeroflot Open and Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting, ahead of Kramnik, Anand, and Leko, which marked a career peak. Bologan consistently represented Moldova in 14 World Chess Olympiads and maintained a top rating exceeding 2700. Bologan was member of the Moldovan Parliament 2019-2021. Author of 11 chess books. FIDE Executive Director since 2018.
